Programme Highlights

Grand Opening
“The Magic Flute-Grand Opera in Two Acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart”
(October 4 to 6, 2019)

“A dazzling live-action cartoon far too adorable to offend.” – Los Angeles Times
“… a quixotic enterprise that buzzes and whirrs and spins with manic energy and joy.” – The Guardian

Tamino flying on the elephant’s back, the Queen of the Night as a giant spider, dancing constellations, butterflies and mechanical monkeys fill the “screen” – the fascination which this Magic Flute exerts over audience of all ages seems endless. This critically acclaimed production by Komische Oper Berlin and the British theatre group “1927”, with its blend of film animation and live singing, has been rapturously received by over 500,000 audience and critics around the globe.

The Magic Flute appears to give rise to more questions and mysteries rather than provide answers. At the end, the immense fantasy of this magical opera defies all logic and reason. Its secret lies in deeper layers of fundamental human experiences for which the fairytale appears simply to be the most adequate form of expression and only music finds the appropriate language. It is with good reason that the “eponymous hero” of the opera is an instrument, or quite simply: music.

Closing concert
The Yellow River Cantata
Macao Orchestra and China NCPA Orchestra and Chorus (October 30,2019)

A great work of the Chinese nation, a milestone in Chinese culture

2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland. In celebration of this commemorative occasion, Macao Orchestra will join hands with China NCPA Orchestra and Chorus to present a concert featuring both Chinese historical classics as well as modern works.

Through the representative art songs from the first half of the 20th century, the beginning of this concert looks back at the vicissitudes and transformations in China’s modern history. The moving melody of Song of the Seven Sons evokes the close and deep connection between Macao and the motherland. The majestic momentum of The Yellow River Cantata in the second half of the concert portrays the tenacity of the Chinese nation and its strength to forge ahead that elevates our pride.
